Natrion unveils game-changing, US-made 'active separator' for batteries

Natrion, a leader in solid-state battery innovation, announced the official launch of the first active battery separator manufactured in the US. Built using the company's proprietary LISIC (Lithium Solid Ionic Composite) technology, the Gen-1 separator is designed to significantly enhance both safety and performance of lithium-ion batteries while integrating seamlessly into existing manufacturing infrastructure.

The company is now accepting pre-orders for its first-generation flagship separator, following the successful ramp-up of its production capabilities to gigascale volumes, as announced in fall 2024.

The breakthrough product delivers substantial improvements over traditional battery components across multiple performance metrics. The separator demonstrates exceptional thermal stability, while increasing energy density by more than 50%. Additionally, it enables rapid charging in just minutes and extends overall battery life.

"Our mandate was to develop a superior battery separator that would not only reduce the bill of materials cost of making Li-ion batteries but also enhance their performance and safety, all while dropping into current gigafactory cell lines with zero disruption," Natrion CEO and founder Alex Kosyakov said in a statement. "We're proud to say we've accomplished that with our Gen-1 active separator, and we've done so as an entirely domestic product."

What sets Natrion apart in the advanced materials space is its emphasis on practical adoption. Rather than requiring manufacturers to invest in costly retooling or production line redesigns, Natrion's separator integrates directly into existing manufacturing systems. This plug-and-play scalability addresses a common barrier to innovation adoption and positions the technology for rapid deployment across the EV supply chain.

The company’s investors include TechNexus and Mark Cuban. Fresh off of earning a Gold Edison Award last year, Natrion is now scaling toward 20 metric tons of annual output by 2026, positioning itself as a critical domestic supplier in the rapidly expanding energy storage and electrification market.

The launch comes at a particularly significant time for US battery manufacturing. As policymakers continue evaluating tariffs on imported battery components and supply chain vulnerabilities remain a concern, Natrion's domestic production capabilities offer valuable protection against import cost volatility and supply disruption risks.

For investors and strategic partners in the electrification and energy sectors, Natrion’s new battery marks a pivotal step toward reshoring battery innovation and strengthening the US energy storage ecosystem.
